Discipleship in an Age of Confusion: Identity, Gender, and Truth

In a world where identity has been detached from its divine source, discipleship must become intentional, doctrinally sound, and spiritually transformative. Dr. Joshua Kolawole examines how the Church must respond with biblical truth and pastoral compassion.

We are living in a time where confusion has been elevated to culture, and identity has been detached from its divine source. Questions of gender, self-definition, and truth are no longer peripheral. They are central battlegrounds shaping hearts, minds, and destinies. In such an age, discipleship cannot remain passive. It must become intentional, doctrinally sound, and spiritually transformative.

Identity We Receive, Not Identity We Construct

Biblical discipleship begins with identity. Not the identity we construct, but the identity we receive. Scripture is clear: humanity is created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27), male and female, with divine intentionality and purpose. This is not merely a theological position. It is the foundation of human dignity, design, and destiny. When identity is divorced from God's design, confusion is inevitable.

Truth Is Revealed, Not Redefined

In a reformed theological framework, truth is not fluid. It is revealed. God has spoken through His Word, and His Word is authoritative, sufficient, and unchanging (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Therefore, discipleship must anchor believers in the truth of Scripture, not the shifting opinions of culture.

"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." — Romans 12:2

We are not called to mirror the world. We are called to be transformed by the renewing of our minds.

Truth and Grace: Holding Both

Discipleship in this age must also be deeply pastoral. We must engage with compassion, not condemnation. Many are navigating genuine struggles, shaped by broken systems, pain, and misinformation.

"The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us... full of grace and truth." — John 1:14

Christ modelled both truth and grace. As leaders and disciplers, we must do the same: holding firmly to biblical convictions while extending the love of Christ to all.

Equipped to Stand Firm

At Transforming Christ International, our mandate is clear: to raise believers who are rooted in truth, filled with the Spirit, and equipped to live out their faith boldly in a confused world. This requires more than teaching. It requires transformation.

Through sound doctrine, spiritual empowerment, and intentional mentorship, we are building disciples who:

  • Know who they are in Christ
  • Can stand firm when culture shifts
  • Engage the world with both conviction and compassion

This is not merely a theological conversation. It is a discipleship mandate. In an age of confusion, the Church must become a pillar of clarity, conviction, and Christ-centred truth.
